Overview:
Importing metadata into your globaledit library is a simple process with a few requirements for success. You'll need the filenames in globaledit for imported metadata to map, ensuring the metadata values in your CSV are aligned to the correct filename. You'll also want to make sure the values in your CSV are formatted to be read by their XMP field type. Export your schema as a CSV with the assets in globaledit selected if you need any of the above.
Exporting Metadata as a CSV:
- Select the assets to be enriched by metadata import
- TIP: Use Recursive Search to select all assets nested in sub-folders
- Head to Metadata in the right panel > > Export as CSV
- Click on the Select Schemas dropdown and uncheck All
- Check the box next to only the schema(s) you'd like to export
- Check the box next to Display Name or XMP Field Name, whichever is preferred
- Click Export
Formatting your CSV:
1) Open the exported CSV in Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel
Each field in the Metadata Schema within GE will be represented by a column in the spreadsheet. The column's name will be represented by either the XMP Field Name or Display Name (whatever was chosen upon export).
The columns are broken down as followed:
- Asset Name - the file name of the asset
- Asset Version - the numerical version of the asset
- Asset ID - the globaledit ID of the asset
- XMP Fields - the metadata fields in the schema
2) Manually apply metadata to each XMP Field, or Copy + paste metadata from another CSV
-
- When entering new metadata, make sure its format matches the existing metadata format in its specific XMP Field:
- For example, This XMP Field "Category" is a MultiSelect field which requires values to have brackets and quotation marks. Values in this field are applied ["x"]:

Once you have completed entering metadata, Save the file.
Importing Metadata via CSV:
Open globaledit then navigate to Library, and select the assets you want to import the edited Metadata CSV file to.
Drag and drop your CSV file into this window or click to open up an external window and select the CSV file from its stored location.
Once uploaded, all of the fields you have updated in the CSV should be reflected here. If so, select your starting row and press next.
Because we have the Lookup by Asset Name option selected under GE:AssetName, globaledit easily locates and matches where the metadata is going to be attached. In this example we can see that the column headers automatically match the incoming CSV for this asset.
Select Import CSV to begin the importing process. A notification of this process can be found by clicking on the notification bell icon. You will also receive an email notification of the update status.
Refresh your Workspace to review the newly imported metadata:
